Water reservoir – Liptovská Mara
The largest water reservoir in Slovakia – Liptovská Mara, near Liptovský Mikuláš, was built between 1965 and 1975. The dam has an area of 22 square kilometres with a maximum depth of 43 metres. Due to its size, it deserves a worthy attribute – Slovenské or Liptovské more (the Slovak Sea). Liptovská Mara is named after the defunct village of Liptovská Mara, which was flooded during the construction of the reservoir. Only a small Gothic church, located in Havránok, has been preserved from the entire village. Its most valuable architectural and artistic parts were transferred to the Museum of the Liptov village in Pribylina. The island of Ratkovie is a well-known dendrologous and ornithological site. The arboretum (a collection of living plants, actually a botanical garden specializing in research and cultivation of plants) with an educational trail is also located on the island. Liptovská Mara offers a wide range of fishing opportunities and you can also take a sightseeing tour on a cruise ship.In the summer, the dam lake provides many opportunities for water sports such as swimming, boating, surfing, Jet Ski riding, etc.
