Spa Piestany
The world-famous spa town of Piešťany is located in the western part of the Slovak republic in the Trnava region, in the valley of Slovakia’s longest river Váh. Thousands of successfully cured visitors, doctors and scientists have been trying to uncover the secret of the Piešťany spa healing power. Today, we know that this phenomenon is caused by a combination of unusual circumstances that only occur in this very location.
The first written account of the city of Piešťany can be found in the Zobor document from 1113. The fame and glory of this city has been developing from the second half of the 17th century. Noblemen and landowners started building the spa complex above the mineral springs. In 1821, count Jozef Erdödy, the district administrator, started building the first bathhouses and pools. In 1889, the spa was rented by the Winter family. A period of great development ensued from this point on – generous construction plans of spa buildings were fulfilled and public promotion brought worldwide recognition.
Natural springs with healing effects – thermal mineral water springing from the depth of 2000 meters and unique sulphuric mud – were the foundation for the establishment of the Piešťany spa. The spa gained worldwide recognition thanks to its modern methods for the treatment of rheumatism and other medical problems of the musculoskeletal system, as well as for its magnificent spa park, rich cultural and social life and a wide variety of sport and active relaxation facilities.
